Tinnitus Treatment & Care
Tinnitus Treatment & Care
Many people experience tinnitus to a certain degree. Often, the experience is short-lived, and the tinnitus fades with little active recognition. However, for some people, tinnitus becomes an invasive and inescapable part of their lives.
While some healthcare professionals may tell you to learn to live with your tinnitus, that’s not what you’ll find at Echo Hearing Center, your local Denver hearing clinic. Our audiologist has worked with many people to treat and manage their tinnitus, and he is ready to help you with your tinnitus symptoms.
Consult With Our Audiologist About Tinnitus
One of our many clinical audiological services is tinnitus treatment and management. When you come in for a tinnitus consultation and evaluation, our audiologist will start with discussing your symptoms, medical history, and other questions to help pin down if there a particular trigger for your tinnitus.
Some people begin to experience severe tinnitus after a stroke or with high blood pressure, and if these are linked in your case, our audiologist may be able to make different recommendations than he normally would for someone with tinnitus.
Progressive Tinnitus Management
After our audiologist has gained an understanding of your background and current tinnitus symptoms, he will work with you to develop a progressive tinnitus management plan. With a customized tinnitus treatment plan, our audiologist will be able to monitor your tinnitus and help you effectively manage it.
Some of the steps our audiologist takes when designing your tinnitus management plan are:
- Work one-on-one with you to design the plan with your tinnitus information included.
- Set up routine check-ups to monitor tinnitus progress, so our audiologist can fine-tune recommendations depending on your response to treatment.
- Provide tinnitus counseling as needed.
Hearing Aids for Tinnitus Treatment
Another common treatment offered to those with tinnitus is the use of hearing aids. In many cases, those individuals with tinnitus also suffer from hearing loss, so the hearing aids can assist with both issues. However, even if you only have tinnitus and no hearing loss, you can still use hearing aids as portable sound generators that can discreetly manage your tinnitus. Some of the top hearing aid options with tinnitus support are:
- Oticon – The Opn hearing aids from Oticon come with Tinnitus SoundSupport, which allows you to access a range of soothing sounds such as ocean sounds and white noise to distract from your tinnitus. You can also use your smartphone to control what sounds are playing and at what volume.
- Signia – There are many hearing aids in the Signia lineup that offers tinnitus management assistance. Using three different tinnitus strategies—static noise, ocean wave, and notch therapy—Signia works to bring effective tinnitus management solutions to everyone.
- Phonak – From the brand Phonak, the hearing aids Audéo Q, Audéo V, Audéo B, Bolero V, and Bolero B all have the Tinnitus Balance built-in. The Tinnitus Balance allows you to use these hearing aids as sound generators.
- Widex – The Widex Zen Therapy hearing aids have a four-part solution strategy which combines counseling, sound amplification, fractal tones, and relaxation to help you overcome your tinnitus.
There are many other hearing aid manufacturers that produce hearing aids with tinnitus support. As our clinic is independent, we can offer you access to all these manufacturers, so you can find your perfect hearing aids.
Tinnitus Retraining Therapy
With tinnitus retraining therapy (TRT), this treatment emphasizes the training of your brain to overcome your tinnitus. Also called habituation therapy, TRT will include our audiologist matching the volume and frequency of your tinnitus so that he can help make your brain notice the sound less than you currently do. Our audiologist may recommend TRT devices to assist with this process.
Over time, your brain should be able to recognize and acknowledge your tinnitus without you being consciously aware of it.
Medication For Tinnitus
Currently, there are no approved medications for treating tinnitus. In part, this lack of medical intervention is due to the fact that researchers are still not clear on what causes tinnitus. So, if you come across medications promising to eliminate or reduce your tinnitus, it may not be in your best interest to buy it.
Should you have other medical issues which can trigger your tinnitus such as high blood pressure, then medication can help subdue the tinnitus trigger. Also, if your tinnitus is causing you serious mental distress, our audiologist may be able to refer you to a physician so that you can receive medication to alleviate those tinnitus triggers.
